The Journey Begins

The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me!

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz? — Janis Joplin

… but Lord, why this one?

And so there it was on the 7th May 2019 on the sellers property.

Me: When was the last time it ran?

Seller: It was running fine until about 6 months ago. It just kind of stalled and we never got it going again.

.. A few minutes later

Sellers Husband: It was last running about 3 months ago.

Hmmm…. so somewhere between 3 and 6 months. The historical rego expired in 2013.

Well it turns over, so at least it’s not seized. Maybe it’s just a fuel pump?

Me: How long have you had it for?

Seller: We bought it about 20 years ago. At the time we had the engine replaced with one that only had 91,000km on it, the car now has 96,000km.

Sellers Husband: I bought it for my wife because she needed a car for work. After she started the job, she was given a company car so this never got driven.

All things considered, it’s a bit rough looking but surprisingly solid. There’s a small amount of rust in the front floors, and a bit of bubbling on the boot lid, but I’ve seen SLC’s way worse than this one asking 3 times this price.

There’s a bit a lot of peeling paint on the passenger from an obviously sub-par repair, and the rest of the car has clearly been resprayed at some time.

And so finally we agreed on a price and it came home. This is not the most glamorous pic, but it was the best I could do at the time.

Tow truck driver: I’ve bought a few cars from Gerry over the years. He used to have another property that was 20-30 acres and it was just filled with American cars. He’s selling them all off now. He’s got plenty more in the sheds.
