M109R Spark Plug Change – Suzuki’s book of lies

It’s been just on 2 years that I’ve had the M109r, but due to licence restrictions (I acquired the bike as a trade on my boat before I had any kind of bike licence), I’ve only done a few hundred Km on it and never really bothered with a service.

With just over 18,000km on it, I figured I would start with the spark plugs as it wouldn’t surprise me if they were the originals.

So I printed off the relevant pages from the service manual and started dismantling the seat and fairings. So far so good …

I then followed the steps to take out the 2 rear spark plugs. When I turned the page to follow the instructions for the front, I realised that the instructions for the front and rear were exactly the same. Except it’s not exactly the same in real life.

The front spark plugs have a lot less clearance space to work with and there’s extra parts that need to be removed.

I had to loosen the secondary brake fluid Reservoir, and a bracket on the rocker covers. I was then able to just fit a spark plug socket on its own. In to that I squeeze a 2 inch extension bar and then was able to fit the ratchet and start undoing them. Each piece had to go in seperately and come out serperately. But that wasn’t the end of it. After undoing the spark plug and taking the tools out the spark plug was left sitting in the plug hole and had to be removed With a pair of needle nosed pliers.

Fortunately, the assembly was easier and went smoothly. For reference, I used NGK CR9EIX Iridium spark plugs.
